Bethesda offers small Elder Scrolls 6 update as series celebrates 30th anniversary
“Playing early builds has us filled with the same joy, excitement, and promise of adventure”
Bethesda has provided a small update on The Elder Scrolls 6.
As part of a larger message released to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the RPG series, the company reiterated that the highly anticipated sequel is in the works.
“Last but not least, yes, we are in development on the next chapter – The Elder Scrolls VI,” it said. “Even now. returning to Tamriel and playing early builds has us filled with the same joy, excitement, and promise of adventure.”

The first game in the series, The Elder Scrolls: Arena, was released on March 25, 1994. The most recent numbered series entry, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, was released in 2011 and has sold over 60 million copies, according to Bethesda.
The Elder Scrolls 6 was announced at E3 2018 with a brief teaser trailer which confirmed it was in pre-production at Bethesda Game Studios.
However, Bethesda also revealed Starfield at the same event, and the sci-fi RPG was ahead of the fantasy one in its release pipeline.
Following several delays, Starfield was released last September and Elder Scrolls 6 is the studio’s next flagship game, ahead of Fallout 5.
Asked if he regretted announcing Elder Scrolls 6 so long ago, series director Todd Howard told GQ last year: “I have asked myself that a lot. I don’t know. I probably would’ve announced it more casually.”
Commenting on what he’d like to achieve with the game, he said: “It’s like… I don’t want to answer, but I want to be polite. I will say that we want it to fill that role of the ultimate fantasy-world simulator. And there are different ways to accomplish that given the time that has passed.”
Former Bethesda publishing boss Pete Hines said last August that Elder Scrolls 6 was in early development, but that fans shouldn’t expect more news about the game to be revealed until “a few years after” Starfield’s release.
Addressing the subject of whether The Elder Scrolls 6 will be an Xbox exclusive, Microsoft’s head of gaming said last summer that the game is “five-plus years away”.
