Mafia studio’s ‘Cthulhu meets Saints Row’ game has reportedly been cancelled

Earnings report suggests the axed Hangar 13 project cost $53 million

Take-Two’s 2K Games label has reportedly cancelled a new title from Mafia studio Hangar 13.

Codenamed Volt, the project had reportedly been in development in various forms since 2017.

But people said to be familiar with Take-Two’s decision told Bloomberg that work on the unannounced project has ceased.

The article’s author, reporter Jason Schreier, claimed Volt was a new IP and that rumours of Hangar 13 making a Mafia 4 “were always false, aside from their early attempts in 2016-2017”.

In its second quarter earnings statement on Wednesday, Take-Two said it had taken “a $53 million impairment charge related to the company’s decision not to proceed with further development of an unannounced title”, but no further details about the project were revealed.

An earlier leak described Volt as an “open-world sci-fi title with supernatural elements” and “Cthulhu meets Saints Row”.

The same leak also outed a Marvel strategy game from Firaxis, the studio behind XCOM, two months ahead of the title being officially announced as Marvel’s Midnight Suns.

And today, 2K delayed the release of Marvel’s Midnight Suns from March 2022 to the second half of the year.

“We know many fans were looking forward to playing the game originally next spring, and this decision did not come lightly,” said the game’s creative director Jake Solomon.

“We decided to push our launch because we need more time to make this the best game possible. We believe in our creative vision for Marvel’s Midnight Suns and want to do justice in delivering an unforgettable adventure”.
