Resident Evil Village will reportedly be ‘the longest RE Engine game yet’
Insider also claims Resident Evil 4 Remake “should follow a similar trend”
Upcoming entries in the Resident Evil series will reportedly be longer than Capcom’s previous games developed with its RE Engine.
Capcom insider Dusk Golem discussed the length of the company’s in-development Resident Evil titles this week after the publisher said it was considering increasing the price of its games for PS5 and Xbox Series X.
April 2020 release Resident Evil 3 was criticised for the short length of its campaign by numerous reviewers, including VGC’s, with our critic calling it “a short adventure with not much to do afterwards.”
Game length aggregation site How Long to Beat measures the game’s main story as taking six hours to complete – less time than previous games developed with Capcom’s RE Engine.
The site measures Resident Evil 7: Biohazard’s main story at 9.5 hours, Resident Evil 2’s at 8.5 hours, and Devil May Cry 5’s at 11 hours.
Capcom announced Resident Evil 8: Village in June ahead of its planned 2021 release, and Dusk Golem claimed it “will be the longest RE Engine game to date”.
“Without saying too much the other stuff coming up should follow a similar trend”, Dusk Golem added.
VGC revealed earlier this year that Capcom is remaking Resident Evil 4. The project is in development at Osaka-based M-Two, the new studio founded by former PlatinumGames head Tatsuya Minami, which has been preparing for its development since 2018.
Resident Evil 4 originally released for GameCube in 2005 but has since been ported to numerous platforms. Its main story takes 16 hours to complete, according to How Long to Beat.
Capcom indicated this week that it’s not surprised by the sales figures for Resident Evil 3, which has so far performed well below recent series instalments.
